September 8-12

Here's what's cookin this week:

Math: 2D shapes and patterns
Letter: M and T
Religion: Genesis 1

Science we are participating in the alphabet exchange.   We were assigned the letter T.  We made tigers.   We had to make 26 of them.  We keep one for our hallway display and mail the other 25.  We enclose a letter with each tiger about our school * we're a Catholic school and what that means, prek-8th attend our school etc.  We also told about our weather and how our leaves will be changing color.  The other kindergarten classes in our group will do the same thing about their city/state.  So we get to learn about 25 cities in 25 different states!  We will find each state on the map and discuss its where abouts compared to PA. We participated in this last year and it is very interesting!

We picked our stuffed animal dog and named them.  The kiddos get to be the teacher and teach their dog letters letter sounds and sight words as I teach them them.  It is so cute to hear them teaching their dogs.  Some of the kiddos were teaching their dogs to write letters.  This is based off of the book: Rocket learns to read.

We played letter/letter sound candyland (to move you have to read the letter and the letter sound on the card) letter sound bingo and letter sound uno/go fish.

We have also begun kid writing.  The kiddos are working on finishing one sentence.  I write the beginning of the sentence on the board (ex: I like to eat) and the students finish the sentence with a word.  Last week they used words around the room to finish the sentence.   This week they will begin stretching words.  I will post more on kid writing next week.

Grandparents Day cards were in your child's backpack.  We made two (one for each set of grandparents).  The cards in the backpack were for any grandparents who couldn't make it.  Grandparents who were able at attend received their cards on Friday.

New sight words will be added later this week.  There is never any homework on the weekend.  Please also keep the word rings in the folder as well.

Our first week!

Here is a peek at our week!

Homework will start coming home Tuesday in a lime green folder.   Please try to complete homework every night.  Although it is not mandatory to do homework,  it will accelerate your child's progress and readiness towards reading.  Please say letters and letter sounds (M mmm) and sight words once through.

Please remember we will do a "community" snack daily.  No individual snacks.  If you have not brought in a snack for the class, please do so by Wednesday.   Jars of cheese balls, animal cookies, fruit snacks, cereal, cheese crackers, etc.  The larger the snack the less often you will need to replenish your snack.

We will begin our curriculum on Tuesday.   We will begin kid writing, math, sight words, religion,  and letters.  I will blog more about these things next week!
