Week One!

We had a great first week together!

We have 8 friends in our classroom:

Fisher
Gavin
Jace
Jackson

Kiaya
Mallory
Sarah
Tatum

This week we learned about classroom rules.  You will notice the sheet that comes home nightly that your child will color in according to how their day went.  Please keep this sheet in your child's folder until Friday after school.  I will put a new one in each Monday.

PLEASE send in a snack for the class if you would like your child to have a snack each day.  If no snack is sent in by Tuesday, your child will not receive snack.

Homework will be starting on Tuesday.  You will find your child's homework in the green folder in their backpack.  Please sign each night you complete homework.  Although it is not mandatory to complete homework, it will accelerate your child's readiness to read.

This week:

Letter: Mm
Sight Words: My, me, make, must
Science: Color words
Religion: Practice blessing ourselves & Our Father prayer

We will also begin Kid Writing this week.  Kid Writing is a guided approach for beginner writers.  Children are encouraged to write whatever sounds they hear in a word, whether they are correct or not.  Writing will be very structured with me providing the majority of the sentence and children generating a word or two on their own.  After they are done writing they draw a picture to match their writing.  I will then go around to each child and work one-on-one with them on their writing.  This is called underwriting.

No pictures this week on our blog as I wait to make sure everyone turned in their permission slip to have their picture on the blog.

Have a great week!

2013-2014 School Year

Welcome to our classroom blog!

Please note in your packet about items your child WILL need for this school year.  I supply the majority of the items (crayons, pencils, pencil box, folder, etc.). Please do not send another pencil box with your child.  We will not be storing anything in our desks and the pencil box I supply is small enough that it will not take up a whole lot of room on your child's desktop.

I WILL supply snack the first week (goldfish and frosted animal crackers).  Please have your snack sent in by the end of the first week of school (August 30th).  Please send in the items I have asked for as soon as possible after school starts.  Thank you in advance!!

Please take a minute to follow our blog.  Please follow by email  (enter your email address).  This way you will be alerted through your email that I have added a post (so you don't have to check the blog to see if I have added a post or not).  You'll get the post as an email or you can still visit the site.  I try to update the blog once a week throughout the school year.

I am excited for another school year to begin!  I am excited to get to know your little one! We are going to have a fantastic year!  You will be amazed at how much your child will learn this year!  We will be reading and writing in no time!

If you have any questions please feel free to ask!  You can call the school (695-3819) and ask for me, email me: rlawruk@stpatsnewry.org, or stop in before school starts at 9:00 A.M.

Miss Lawruk :)

I wanted to let you know that I have not updated the blog with pictures because I have a special surprise for you at Kindergarten graduation!

This is the LAST day your child needs to bring his/her backpack.  All remaining art projects and personal items will be sent home.

**I forgot to collect guided reading books on Friday.  Please return them on Tuesday! **

Monday: No School

Tuesday: School Picnic- We will be served hot dogs and hamburgers.  I believe other treats are also going to be available.  If your child does not want a hot dog or hamburger, please pack their lunch in a disposable brown paper bag.  Wear your tie dye shirts!

Wednesday: Graduation!!  Graduation begins promptly at 10:30 in the gym.  After graduation, light refreshments (cookies) will be served.  This is your child's last school day!!  Please have your child wear "church" clothes.  Girls may wear dresses, skirts, or pants.  They may wear sandals.  Boys can wear dress pants/shorts and a nice shirt.

Eating your words

We have been working on word families.  So far we have learned: at, ug, in, it, ot, op word families.  For example: Pin, tin, bin, chin (for the 'in' word family).

We use magnetic letters to make word family words.  The next day we review the word family and the students have to come up with the words on their own.  They write them on their sheet.  After they have filled up their paper with words, they use markers to trace over the words.

 Hunter tracing over his words

After st. trace the words, they use the snack that correlates with the word family to cover up the letters in the word family.  Brooklyn covering up the 'ug' words with Lucky Charms.

The final step, st. take turns reading one word at a time to their partner.  After they say the word, they get to eat the snack covering the word family.

We used Dots for the 'ot' word family and Skittles for the 'it' word family.

American Symbols

We did a directed drawling of the Statue of Liberty after learning about it.

We also learned about the American Flag.  We water colored the stripes and we used white paint for the stars.

We learned about the Liberty Bell and the Bald Eagle as well.

We are now learning about dogs!  We have studied about the boxer, border collie, golden retriever, Saint bernard, pug, and the German Shepard.

First we watched Dogs 101 on Animal Planet on the smart board

We read about each dog and then we write 2 facts we learned about each dog in our dog books.

The we draw a picture for each fact we wrote.

and wrote why we thought that.

We wrote what we would do if we found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
