Christmas Around the World

Christmas Around the World

We studied countries who celebrate Christmas.  We learned how their traditions are alike and different from ours!  We learned how each celebrates the birth of Jesus and the Christmas story, how to say Merry Christmas in that language, what they eat, what they call Santa, and much more!

Our suitcase we decorated for each country we visited and where we kept our items we made in each country.

We boarded our airplane with our plane tickets and watched a "movie" which was a powerpoint about the country we were going to visit.

Sweden

We learned the eldest girl in each family gets up early and makes breakfast for the family and serves them breakfast in bed!  The eldest girl would also lead the singing and wear the wreath of candles on their head.  Both the girls in our class would have this job if they lived in Sweden!

Boys wear cone shaped hats with stars on them.

Mexico

We learned about the legend of the poinsettia and how a boy wanted to give something to Jesus but had no money.  So he picked a green plant by the side of the church and when he gave it to Jesus it grew red flowers (poinsettia).  So we made poinsettias.

We filled in our Mexico page.

We filled our passport with pictures of flags of the places we visited.

We made pinatas because that is a tradition of Mexico on Christmas Eve.

England
We learned boys and girls leave stockings out too so we made stockings and hung them up!  Santa visited and filled our stockings!  Did you know...England was the first country to send Christmas cards?

Germany

Gingerbread houses are a big tradition in Germany so we had a gingerbread day leading up to our Christmas party when we made gingerbread houses.

We learned what they call their Christmas trees: Tannenbaum

Did you know Germany was the first country to have Christmas trees in their house and the first country to decorate them?

Here is  a look at what we did on our gingerbread day!

 Colored gingerbread houses

Made gingerbread men

Cut apart strips of paper (which ended up being a gingerbread man) and put them in numerical order to make the correct picture.
