AR

Have you seen this in the hall?  Has your kiddo came home talking about an AR test?  Wondering what it is all about?  AR is short for accelerated reader.  It boils down to this...the kids read books and take a short test on what they read (to see what they comprehend while reading).  Tests are taken on the smartboard in our room and there are usually 5 questions to answer.  If they do good on the test and pass, they get points.  If they get to their goal, then they get a reward at the end of each marking period!  The reward for this marking period is a $5 gift certificate to spend on Scholastic books!!!!  The marking period ends January 16th.  The goal is for each child to get 5 points this marking period.

The rings on the wall represent each test the kids have taken.  The picture of above is from last week and all the kids now have points.  Most of the books are worth .5 points.  On the Scholastic website for book clubs, I have looked through all the books available right now and picked books that are in the kiddos AR book range in case you would like to order or if your kiddo earns the $5 worth of free books!  They can be found under recommendations once you sign in.  Click here to go to the scholastic sight.  Remember, our activation code is:  JQQLP.  You can order online or send in cash/check (checks made out to Scholastic) to me and I will mail it for you.  Under the search bar on Scholastic, I searched '$1' and got tons of $1 books!

If you would like to search to see what books you have at home are AR books you can click here.  If your child reads the book at home, have him/her bring the book(s) into school so he/she can take an AR test on them.  I will make sure the books get returned home.

**If you find a book/books that total more than $5 you will only have to pay the difference (if your child makes his/her AR goal and gets the $5 coupon).  If you find a pack of books for $7 you will only pay $2 for them.  Plus, it is free shipping!

If you look up books on the AR website or on Scholastic, you might see something that looks like this:

IL: LG - BL: 1.4 - AR Pts: 0.5

BL: Book Level
.1 - .9 would be kindergarten book levels

* Once you get above 1.0 the number to the left of the decimal stands for the grade level they are reading at.  The number to the right of the decimal means what month of the school year.  For example, if you use the number above (1.4), that means your child is reading at a level that a first grader in December should be reading at.  If you child can read an AR book level of 1.7 then your child is reading where a first grader in March would be reading at.

AR Pts: How many points the book is worth if your child passes the test.  The books become worth more as the BL (book level) increases.

Here are the book levels your child has already read and taken a test at:

Hunter:  .1 -  2.9

Brooklyn:  .1  -  2.4

Violet:  .1  -  .9

Carl:  .1  -  1.4

I hope this helps you to understand AR!  If you have ANY questions please feel free to ask me, email me, or comment on the post and I will try to answer any questions you have!
